My Next Chapter
Connecting At-Risk Youth to a Brighter Future
According to the Children’s Law Center of California, nearly one hundred times a day, an at-risk youth in California is placed in foster care. Los Angeles County alone has over 33,000 foster youth in care who have experienced abuse, neglect, or abandonment. As a result, at-risk youth in foster care often transition into adulthood without the tools and support they need to thrive. Only 1 out of 2 who age out of the system will have some form of gainful employment by the age of 24, and only 3% will earn a college degree.
A partnership between Thematic Learning Organization and Shelter37 has designed an educational and motivational program, My Next Chapter–Connecting Youth to a Brighter Future. My Next Chapter will provide foster youth/young adults that age out of the system with real-life skill sets to help them in their transition into adulthood and give them an opportunity to secure employment and/or start their own business. The training will be delivered by industry professionals and educators through in-person, virtual, and online classroom settings.
Shelter37 is a non-profit that was founded by 2X Super Bowl Champion, James Washington. James was born and raised in Watts and is committed to giving back to the youth in the community by providing effective life skills, job training, and educational programs. He’s currently the president of the NFL Alumni Association Southern California. He has partnered with Thematic Learning Organization, a non-profit that partners with corporations, state and local government, schools, churches, and non-profit organizations to offer educational workshops.
My Next Chapter will offer scholarships to foster youth/young adults and any youth from our community, ages 18 – 25, to participate in their inspirational, motivation, education, and vocational program.
In addition to being motivated by inspiring speakers, program participants will learn about how to set goals, stay focused, and the principles for building a solid financial foundation. They will also learn fundamental entrepreneur principles, including creating business plans, legal business structures, business financials, and risk management. The program will allow participants to learn and become certified/licensed in the insurance industry, tax preparation, bookkeeping, real estate, and e-commerce.
Support At-Risk and Former Foster Youth to A Brighter Future
Our goal is to grow our resources to a minimum of $1 million to offer the program to foster youth/young adults throughout Los Angeles County and beyond. We rely on the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and business partners to raise funds. Every dollar gained will go directly to support program costs, including scholarships, computers, study courses, materials, books, licenses, certificates, and more. Your gift of any amount will be a huge part of providing this opportunity for the youth/young adults who aged out of the foster care system as they transition to their next chapter.
